About the ES: Bio & B.S.

The Enlightened Spartan is an
independent, fan's voice to Michigan State Spartan football. The ES aims to spread the gospel that is the truth and beauty of Spartan football to the worldwide masses. The website provides a voice about MSU football "not from the press box, or the sidelines, but from the upper deck." Why was the Enlightened Spartan created?

1. frustration over years of MSU football mediocrity;
2. the need to tell the world about a fan's opinionated view of MSU football;
3. to keep friends & family across the globe in touch about the REAL happenings of MSU football;
4. to keep the ES' sports information experiences and contacts in flow;
5. too much time and too much beer;

6. because I LOVE SPARTAN FOOTBALL!!!

ES tag lines:

"If the Spartans win, we'll praise 'em... if they lose, we'll haze 'em."

"Not from the sidelines, nor the press box, but from the upper deck."

ES cultural influences:

The ES has been culturally influenced most significantly: 1) by the film Bar Fly ("Don't eat that corn, its GREEN"); 2) Tom Waits ("I've got a bad liver and a broken heart" or "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy"); and, (3) from his 1991 cross country road trip with fraternity bro Rufus to the Grateful Dead show making it in under 42 hours -- including a 6-hour nail in the foot injury stop in Salt Lake City -- from Lansing to Shoreline Amphitheatre in Redwood City, CA.

Bio:

The Enlightened Spartan was created in 2001. The ES has a Master of Sport Administration from CMU in 1999 (thesis: The Perceptions of NCAA D-1A Athletic Directors of Right To Work Legislation. pdf) and a pair of Bachelor of Science degrees from MSU in Social Science and Political Science, graduating in 1990.

The ES worked in intercollegiate athletics and served as Assistant AD/SID for Olivet College (2000-01, including SID for 2000 NCAA Golf Championships), Assistant SID for Michigan Tech (1999-2000), Public Relations Asst for the West Coast Conference (1998-99), and grad assistant to Central Michigan including director of MAC Wrestling Championships (1996) and baseball public address announcer (1996-98).

The ES is an Air Force brat, so he's been around the world and seen lots of stuff. He was an All-Conference football player in high school at AFCENT (Allied Forces Central Europe) as a wide receiver/punter/cornerback from 1985-86... he still remembers when coach told him to get his ass onto the field in a 1985 game vs ISB (Int'l School of Brussels) because he was the only guy on the team without mud on his pants... he was flattened by an opposing LB on a cross-block the next play. He also took sixth place in the pole vault for AFCENT track in the 1986 European Track Championships. Jesus, it seems like eons ago.

But, most importantly, was the ES's first indoctrination to college football. He attended his first college football game in 1975 at the age of seven, a 28-0 MSU Spartan loss to Ohio State in East Lansing. Things have never been the same since... Interestingly enough, from 1977-1984, he attended every home football game for the California Golden Bears -- trust me Spartan fans, it was worse in Berkeley!

ES as recording star

The ES also has been recorded on a pair of internationally released CDs, on the exclusive soundtracks with the tunefilter label. Check out Zoom or Big R House for the lead vocals. Link here or for song history, link here (more interesting, makes you want to BUY BUY BUY). ES thanks Chock in California for the opportunity to be a major recording artist... thanks, bud!
