The Skinny on the Eagles 2006:

Phil Steele: 97th nationally/6th MAC West
Street & Smiths: 6th MAC West
College FB News: 103rd nation
Schedule Strength: 95th
Coach: Jeff Genyk (3rd year, 8-14)
Series: MSU spanking EMU, 6-0-0
Website: www.emueagles.com/
Factoids: MSU has beat 154-14 in its last three meetings in the past ten years. We've just beaten the Eagles into submission. It's been a crying shame.
Best Player: The Eagles placekicker, Andrew Wedlock, is on the Groza watch list as one of the best in the land. He's got three years of experience, and kicked 39 field goals in the past two years alone. He'll need about 14 field goals on Sept. 9 to beat MSU.
Best 2005 win: The 23-20 win in Mt. Pleasant was surprising against the upstart Chips. My CMU buddies were bummin'.
Worst 2005 loss: They got their freaking ass handed to them by Michigan. It was bad timing: after scUMs loss the weak before to ND, they decided to pile it on against the EMUs.
2006 season clincher:
If Eastern can pull out a victory at Western Michigan late in the season, they could find themselves set up for a nice home stand to cross over the .500 mark this year.
2006 biggest pitfall: Their back-to-back games vs Big Ten teams MSU and Northwestern could end up breaking more bones than the payout is worth. The Eagles could give up 100 points in two weeks.
2006 biggest creampuff(s): We'll see how the Eagles fare this year having to travel to Katrinaville to take on Lafayette. They spanked the Cajuns 31-10 last year in Ypsi, and we'll see if they can get it done in the swamps.
Biggest weakness: Their secondary sucks; it will be the worst MSU faces all year, and Drew Stanton should have an absoloute field day pouring it on. The Eastern corners are 5-9 and 5-10, which is gonna be tough against 6-7 Matt Trannon, 6-2 Kerry Reed, 6-3 TJ Williams, and 6-2 Devin Thomas. Ouch.
Biggest strength(s): That damn kicker is good. Maybe he can defect before kickoff. But, also watch 6-5 wideout Eric Deslauriers, who is a bonafide NFL high draft pick. He had 75 receptions for 8 TDs and 11.7 yds per catch last year.
Road Trip to Ypsilanti: Best bar - The Sidetrack Bar & Grill in downtown Ypsi has great beer on tap and is a nice old fashioned pub in Old Town Ypsilanti. They've got Frog Island and every other beer you need. It's pretty tough, however, to get fired up about Ypsi when you have the Yellow Bellies just a few miles away. It's best just to avoid this part of the state if you can.
Chance to win: Rating scale -
Drew Stanton is licking his chops, looking at that Eagle secondary. The key is for the Spartan offensive line to hold off an experienced Eagle defensive line and LB crew. But, pitting a mid-level talented Big Ten vs. a lower-tiered MAC team should give MSU the nod in that category. The ES sez: SHOULD. We'll see how John L Smith can screw this up. Seriously, not even he can mess this one up. The Spartans will jump to a 2-0 start behind long Stanton-to-tall receivers passes. This is the perfect game for Javon Ringer and Jehuu Caulcrick to POUND away as the game wears on. The ES sees a similar outcome as three years ago, when MSU won by 51 points in Spartan Stadium, and just poured it on as the game moved along. The Spartan defense should be able to hold its own against an Eagle team with an inexperienced running attack, a mediocre-at-best QB, but great receivers. EMU will get a score up top on some wild throw, but mostly will get lots of long FG attempts. MSU will win going away, 45-16.
Projection: Eastern Michigan University's most significant athletic accomplishments in recent years have been: (1) Earl Boykins, (2) Ben Braun, (3) Charlie Batch. The first two are basketball greats, the third played for years in the NFL team of death for quarterbacks, the Detroit Lions. If Ben Braun wuz coaching these gridders, and Charlie Batch could hand it off to Boykins to squeeze through the line... well maybe they'd have a chance. At least we could see Boykins get squashed like a mosquito. Instead, we have reality, with Genyk coaching, and Jones throwing it to DesLauriers. I wonder if any relation to the ES's old college buddy, Paul DesLauriers. Anyhow, EMU has a legit shot to beat Ball State in the season opener on the road, as well as Central, Lafayette, at Western, Ohio, and at Kent State. That would put them at 6-6, and they need to sneak another win or two to really turn heads. Hopefully that won't happen in East Lansing. If so, John L Smith won't last the season.
