The
Skinny on the Skinny Birds: 2007
Phil
Steele: 29th nationally/4th Big Ten
Schedule Strength: 43rd
Sporting News: 34th nation/5th Big Ten
Coach: Kirk Ferentz (55-43, 8 years)
Series: Iowa leads 17-15-2
Homefield: Kinnick Stadium (70.585)
Website: hawkeyesports.cstv.com
Factoids: In all honesty, the ES knows as much about
Iowa City and the Univ of Iowa as probably the typical Iowa student knows
about Michigan State: not much.
Best Player: DE Ken Iwebema (#92) was their best player
back in 2005; and though injured last year he is healthy and plans to
be a terror in 2007. He's a potential All-American pass rusher. Brian
Hoyer better watch his back side or this guy will rip his head off.
Best 2007 win: The 47-17 win vs Purdue looks impressive
on paper, and is more impressive looking back as Iowa ended up with a
losing record despite kicking some Boiler butt.
Worst 2007 loss: The 31-28 loss at Indiana was the beginning
of the end for Iowa last year. The wheels fell off and they didn't win
another Big Ten game.
2007
key game: Oct. 6 at Penn State. How good is Iowa really? If they
beat Wisconsin early, that's a big wow. But, what would be more impressive
would be pulling the upset over JoePa in mid-season. Ferentz can do it.
2007 biggest pitfall: at Wisconsin on Sept. 22. One helluva
introduction into the 2007 Big Ten season. The ho-hum Iowa front lines
have no chance in the trenches against Wisky.
2007 biggest creampuff(s): Iowa gets a gold star for
not scheduling out of the division. They get a reprieve to end the season
by hosting Western Michigan (what is up with that scheduling??? STRANGE).
Biggest weakness: The passing game. Who is QB Jake Christensen
(#6)? Who is WRs Dominique Douglas (#88) and Andy Brodell (#80)? Who is
TE Tony Moeaki (#81)? And, the O-line returns with little experience to
give Christensen time. The ES sees shades of MSU's 2006 Drew Stanton season
in Iowa...
Biggest strength(s): Iowa's defensive line is outstanding.
They should be able to crush the run and hold their own against any line
in the Big Ten this year. DE Bryan Mattison (#89) returns with 6.5 sacks
last year, and a healthy Iwebama joins him on the other end. What a mean
set of bookends. FYI - the ES has always liked CB Charles Godfrey (#13),
one of the Big Ten's BEST corners.
Chance
to win: Rating scale.
This has always been an up-and-down series. I hate that damn chicken on
the sidelines, though. The Hawkeyes truly have the worst mascot in the
nation. They should retire him by roasting him over a homecoming bonfire..
The
ES loves Kirk Ferentz because he works hard at everything but the skill
positions. Always great interior lines, great special teams play, well-coached
defense, and few penalties.
Iowa:
great defense, average offense.
MSU: average offense, average defense.
Intangibles:
Iowa coaching, Iowa home field, MSU special teams.
Key
player: Iowa - LB A.J. Edds (#49) will shadow MSU's Ringer to keep him
from breaking the big one. MSU - QB Brian Hoyer can't whistle Dixie and
needs to make the passes crisp, especially on third down; he's gotta move
the chains.
Final
score: Iowa 22, MSU 18.
Note:
??? It is too much to ask of the Doctor to go 7-2 in Iowa. Let's see if
he can peel the paint off the walls at halftime a la Perles. Methinks
not, but me hopes so.
