The
Skinny on the Buckeyes: 2007
Phil
Steele: 15th nationally/3rd Big Ten
Schedule Strength: 35th
Sporting News: 17th nation/4th Big Ten
Street & Smiths: 1st nation
Coach: Jim Tressel (62-14 in 5 years/137-57-2 in Division
I-AA)
Series: OSU leads 25-12-0
Homefield:
Ohio Stadium (101,568)
Website: www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com
Factoids: The ES' first football game was in attendance
at Spartan Stadium in 1975 when the Buckeyes whitewashed the Spartans,
21-0.
Best Player: That guy with a disease for a name: James
Laurinaitis (#33) at MLB is a consensus 1st Team All American 'backer.
Best 2006 win: The 42-39 victory over scUM at home wasn't
that close as the Yellow Bellies had to rally throughout the second half
to pull close.
Worst 2006 loss: They only had one loss, but it was a
butt kicking in the title tile to Fla, 41-14.
2007
key game: Oct. 27 at Penn State. On the road against an up and
coming JoePa team, and Happy Valley is a tough place to play. The Buckeyes
are just 2-5 at JoePa Land.
2007 biggest pitfall: Besides Penn State, Tressel has
to play the best team in the Big Ten, Wisconsin, and at scUM to end the
year. All three are tough for a Buckeye squad that is down a notch from
a year ago.
2007 biggest creampuff(s): Here's another Big Ten team,
scheduling another D1AA game, with OSU opening vs. Youngstown State.
Biggest weakness: The passing game. The Bucks lost their
Heisman award winner, Troy Smith, and bring in Todd Boeckman (#17), who
has exactly zero starts. The WR corps is void of their top two All Conference
receivers and are led by Brian Robiskie (#80) who caught 29 passes last
year.
Biggest strength(s): The linebacking corps is just about
the best in the Big Ten, and one of the best in the nation, with Laurinitis
(4 sacks, 5 INTs last year), Marcus Freeman (#1) and Larry Grant (#6).
The defensive backfield is also outstanding, with Malcolm Jenkins (#2)
and Jamario O'Neal (#3) with another 5 INTs combined from a year ago.
Road Trip to Columbus: Best dive bar - Larry's Bar; Best
grub - Barcelona Restaurant.
Ohio State famous alums: Jessie Owens (track/Olympics),
Jack Nicklaus (golf)... that's enough.
OSU interesting facts: OSU has researched the fact that
colorblind job seekers have taken steps to hide their condition from potential
employers. Also, Buckeye researchers suggest that nearly two out of every
three people treated for allergies are not really allergic.
Chance
to win: Rating scale.
There ain't no way a rebuilding Spartan squad can win in Columbus against
a rebuilding Buckeye squad. And, it don't look that great on paper either:
strong OSU LB and DBs against a weak Spartan WR corps; and, a poor Spartan
pass rush that will give a mediocre OSU passing game more time than they'll
have all year. The OSU defensive line is less experienced than MSUs...
but it doesn't matter, because they are better.
Amazing
stat: Last year, Ohio State was successful on 49% of its third down plays,
and gave up just 33%. That's a whopping 16% difference; or, 20 more convertions
(on 17 less attempts) for the Buckeyes than their opponents. In other
words, when the chips are down, OSU converts.
Finally,
bottom line is that Jim Tressel is the best coach in the nation and his
success is what we Spartans aim to achieve. Some day. Dantonio can sit
back, watch, and learn against his mentor in this game. Teacher vs pupil:
always pick the teacher. Interestingly, although MSU has won just 4 times
in the last 20 meetings, and just twice in Columbus in that span, the
meetings were 11 years apart: 1987, 1998... and now, 2007??? Naah.
Some
day, the ES will actually make it INTO Columbus for a game. But, why bother
if we are just gonna get our butt kicked? We need to have a chance to
win before the ES heads into that craphole called the Shoe.
Make
it Teacher Tressel 28, Pupil Doctor 13.
