The Skinny on the JoePas 2006

Phil Steele: 31st nationally/4th Big Ten
Schedule Strength: 27th
Sporting News: 15th nation/3rd Big Ten
Street & Smiths: 20th/3rd Big Ten
Sports Illustrated: 19th/3rd Big Ten
Coach: Joe Paterno (354-117-3/40 years)
Series: MSU leads 11-11-1
Website: www.gopsusports.com
Factoids: Freaking JoePa debunked the Old Man myth by going 11-1 last year. But, really, he is an old man: including his time as an assistant coach, his career has spanned 10 US Presidencies...
Best Player: LB Paul Posluszny is the best LB in the country; he won the Butkus award last year, and he's back for more. WR Derrick Williams is pretty damn good, too.
Best 2005 win: The win over Ohio State at home was huge. The Buckeyes ended up #4 in the country and JoePa whooped up on them last year at home, 17-10.
Worst 2005 loss: Their only loss, on the last play of the game, was the robbery at the Big House, losing 27-25.
2006 season clincher: The Oct. 14 game vs scUM is a rematch at home made in heaven. Hey, Yellow Bellies: pay backs are hell!
2006 biggest pitfall: Joe Pa will have a tough time at Notre Dame in week two. Both teams will be feeling each other out early, but the Irish have the upper hand at home.
2006 biggest creampuff(s): Youngstown State. JoePa's ethics aren't that stellar, now, are they - scheduling a Playoff Division team instead of a Bowl Division team...
Biggest weakness: The QB, Anthony Morelli, has great targest to throw the ball, but he doesn't have lots of quality experience. It's a big drop off for JoePa here. The Lions also lack lots of experience along both lines and in the defensive backfield.
Biggest strength(s): The LB corps for JoePa is the best in the country; shades of Ohio State last year, with two of the best (Posluszny, Connor) in the nation on the same team. They will be called upon to plug the holes on an iffy line.
Chance to win: Rating scale. MSU can't win in Happy Valley; this is a 1-of-5 on the scale until they win in PA. MSU sucks against JoePa since he's joined the Big Ten: MSU is just 3-10 against the Old Man since 1993 - MSU hasn't won in Happy Valley since 1965, when the Beatles had just finished invading the United States and, incidentally, before the ES was born.

On paper, it looks like MSU should match up just fine. MSU has more experience on the interior lines than does JoePa, MSU has a more balanced and deeper offense, and MSU's defensive backfield has more experience that JoePa.

Alas, but the difference is four-fold: 1) talent, 2) coaching, 3) special teams, 4) home field. 1) Experience is the Spartan's edge, but JoePa can sniff out talent like a hussy smelling out a stud. And, JoePa has talent where he don't have experience. They are young, but they're jazzed and hungry. And, JoePa's coaching experience can tame them into success. Look at last year: the Lions came out of the gate hungrier, outscoring opponents 82-23 in the first stanza; they also left halftime hungrier, dominating opponents with a 68-28 edge in the 3rd quarter. On special teams, Joe Pa returns a FG kicker, Kevin Kelly, who as a freshman hit 16-of-23 FGs; their punter is competent, but they cover kicks well and both Derrick Williams and Justin King are break-away threats returning kicks. Finally, reality is that MSU has just gotten pasted year in and year out in Happy Valley. If John L Smith has to win this game to save his job, he ain't got a chance and JoePa will show him the door. JoePa would show him the door anyway. MSU will compete a bit more closely than last year, but the score will be roughly the same: JoePa 30, MSU 24.

Projection: The ES is fuzzy about this one. Reading between the lines, it seems that the magazines are all over JoePa because of his history, not because of his team. Are they rating this team so high because of a strong LB corps and good receivers, or because they are giving him his due, which he has earned? If this were two years ago, the magazines would be calling for a losing season... just one returning starter on the line on both sides of the ball, and the pundits are talking a top-three Big Ten finish? It's all JoePa, folks.

Mr. Geritol has tough road matchups at NDame, Ohio State, Purdue and Wisky. He'll win one of those. He has tough home matchups vs scUM, Northwestern and MSU. At best, he'll win two of those three. JoePa should clean the rest of his slate, which is a 8-4 regular season record. The Lion faithful should be proud.
